Aquatic Plants by George Tice

George Andrew Tice was born on October 13, 1938, in Newark, New Jersey, into a family with deep local roots. Raised by his mother, Margaret Robertson, Tice’s passion for photography ignited at 14 through the Carteret Camera Club. Self-taught, he began with a Kodak Brownie, earning early recognition for images of homeless men on the Bowery.

Tice started as a darkroom assistant after briefly studying commercial photography. In 1956, he joined the U.S. Navy, where his photograph Explosion Aboard the U.S.S. Wasp (1959) appeared in the New York Times and was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. After his service, he focused on personal projects, using large-format cameras to capture American landscapes, especially New Jersey. In 1969, he co-founded the Witkin Gallery, printing for icons like Edward Steichen and Edward Weston.

His books Fields of Peace (1970) and Paterson (1972)—the latter winning the Grand Prix du Festival d’Arles—cemented his fame. Notable works like Petit’s Mobil Station, Cherry Hill, New Jersey (1974) and White Castle, Route 1, Rahway, New Jersey (1973) showcase his talent for finding beauty in the everyday. Later projects include Urban Landscapes (1975) and Seacoast Maine (2009).

Tice earned fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation (1973) and the National Endowment for the Arts, an honorary doctorate from William Paterson University (2003), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lucie Foundation (2015). His work is held in over 100 museum collections, including the Met and MoMA. His retrospective Lifework: Photographs 1953–2013 (2022) celebrated his career. Personal Life

A lifelong New Jerseyan, Tice had five children from two marriages: Joanna Blaylock (1958–1960) and Marie Tremmel (1960–1976). He died on January 16, 2025, at 86.

Known as New Jersey’s “photographer laureate,” Tice’s masterful black-and-white images preserve America’s vanishing scenes, merging technical precision with profound emotion, inspiring countless photographers.
